Addenbrookes Hospital MSCP, Cambridge
Recently completed and due to open this month, James & Taylor have completed the design and supply of an entirely bespoke 7500 M² twisted fin cladding system. The new 1200 space, 9 level, multi storey car park off Robinson Way forms part of the Addenbrookes hospital complex in Cambridge and has been built to serve the expanded Rosie Maternity Hospital and the relocated Papworth.
James & Taylor designed, developed and supplied a unique twisted fin cladding system that spirals around the building like a stacked multiple Möbius strip. The fins are clear anodised on one side and powder coated bright yellow on the other to emphasise the twist and provide a visual link to the Rape seed fields that surround the site.
More than 100 tonnes of twisted fin cladding are supported by a specially designed substructure system. 120 different types of stainless steel bracket attach vertical aluminium 'T' and tube sections to which the fins are secured with bespoke stainless steel fasteners.
The completed facade looks stunning and serves up more than enough visual drama to retain interest in the simple rectangular elevations.
